Default WoW Paladin Coming Back to Guild Wars - Need Help

So when Guild Wars first launched long long ago, I played a ranger character all the way through the Prophecies campaign. I never did Fissure of Woe or Underworld back in the day but I did once have a victory in the old Hall of Heroes. Soon after all this I joined the military, forgot all about Guild Wars and started playing World of Warcraft. It has been about three and a half years now since I played.

My girlfriend recently played through all the Prophecies missions as a necromancer when she was playing the game. She then quit and joined WoW as well.

Now we both want to come back to Guild Wars and play through all three campaigns and the expansion together. Looking at the four new classes (Ritualist, Assassin, Paragon, Dervish) in addition to the old classes, I don't know what I want to play.

In WoW, I played a holy raiding priest for eighteen months before switching to a holy raiding paladin for the last two years. What class is most like a WoW paladin? In looking on the Wiki it seems like Paragons most fit the description. Are they really good healers? I want to be a good healer but I'm not sure if I want to go with a monk. Perhaps Paragon/Monk would make a good combination?

Also, my girlfriend was wondering what the playstyle of the Dervish is like.

Instead of healing like a paladin might, Paragons in PvE do better preventing damage as well as boosting their allies DPS using a build like this one: http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Imbagon

Dervishes are damage dealers who can hit multiple foes with their scythes and area of effect skills. They also have good health, defensive enchantments, and healing abilities. They do have some shape-shifting skills called Avatars but they see limited use compared to their most used skill, [wounding strike].

For more info on playing a dervish, check out the dervish section on these forums or http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guide...g_as_a_dervish.

most like the WoW paladin? probably a W/Mo "wammo" build. however, they kinda suck.

if you want something that's similar to the wammo but much better, try a dervish. they're essentially created by taking the wammo and buffing it into the ionosphere: built-in aoe attack, sever+gash in one skill (with 3s recharge), ubermending, uberbuffs.

I mainly just want to be an excellent healer class. My girlfriend is going to be playing a damage dealer so since we'll be playing together, I just want to be a healer. I wasn't sure if monks were still the only effective group healers in the game or if paragons could be as good as monks in healing.

Ritualists can be great healers. Paragons are less healers and more general support. Paragon/Monk could be viable as an alternate to W/Mo and is probably closer to a Paladin-type than W/Mo anyway.

My friend plays a Paragon (P/W) and I play a Dervish (D/Mo). Those two classes together can make a great team - he always uses shouts and chants to buff me more than my enchantments do already, and I cause insane amounts of damage while self-healing.

If you're just looking for a healing class but without going monk, you might want to try playing as a Ritualist. They're an alternative healer with good energy management if you use [offering of [email protected]].

I was never against monks, I just assumed from their looks that Paragon would be able to be healers like monks.

In the end, I just want to be a very excellent healer, class doesn't matter and my girlfriend wants to be an excellent damage dealer.

If you want to be an excellent healer, I'd go with Ritualist or Monk. Monks are the primary healers in the game, and Rits are just really flexible and can do pretty much anything you'd want them to do.

For damage dealing, Dervish is awesome. Scythes do the most damage of any weapon in the game, and it's a pretty flexible class, using enchantments as buffs, self-heals, snares, and simply pumping up the amount of damage you can do. I'm the primary damage dealer when I'm on my Dervish, and I can out-do both my friend's Warrior and my brother's Warrior, both of which are very well setup.

Though I will warn that if you go Rit and your girlfriend goes Dervish, you won't be able to play together for a while since the classes are specific to different campaigns.

Yeah that's why I'm thinking going monk. Currently we just have one account (my old one that has my hunter and her necro) and it only has prophecies/factions on it so I was about to go pick up two copies of nightfall to play through and then in a week or two go pick up eye of the north for both of us and factions/prophecies for the second account.

So you think a Dervish and Monk team would do well through the game?

I personally think that a Dervish and Monk team would do well together, yeah. I personally tend to go out and do stuff with just a monk hero for the "oh crap" moments you occasionally find, just in case my self-healing can't keep up. Also as there are a lot of monk spells that are also enchantments, you'll be helping buff her Dervish a lot by using them, as there's a lot of Dervish skills that become more powerful when you're enchanted.

Oh, and just so you know - on amazon.com, up until April 22nd (I think), if you buy GW Trilogy, it comes with EOTN for free. I'd definitely consider that if you're planning on buying all of them anyway. Here's the link.

Yes, they synergise very well together since monks have access to many enchantments and Dervishes benefit from enchantments via their Mysticism Attribute.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

I think I'm going to check the local gamestop/walmart/best buy to see what kind of prices they have on them and pick up at least Nightfall for both of us today.

My advice on this - do not go to Target. Nightfall is like $35-40 there. Gamestop would be the best place to look, IMO - there are many stores that give a 50% discount on d-listed (discontinued, aka games they don't still get copies of) PC games. That's how I picked up everything except for Nightfall, personally.

I really would recommend the trilogy from Amazon, though :P

The necro class has outstanding energy managment if you dont want to go pure monk primary. Necros are very versitle class and can do much of everything very well except melee. The necro aslo has skills like [Mark of Pain] which can boost damage for the dervish. You can also go with a n/rt healer and take along [splinter weapon] and give the dervish even more AoE power and both of you could just mow down PvE. Also is you decide to go ritualist as your primary and your girlfriend as a dervish you wont be able to play together right away since one is from nightfall and the other from factions. You would have to join up later on during the game. The primary classes can start in any campaign, Warrior,Monk,Necro,Mesmer,Ele and ranger. Also if you get bored with just healing the necro can use minions or even [Spiteful Spirit] which is one of the better elites in the game.

Hope you guys have fun playing!!

Wow so nowhere around here carries Guild Wars anymore. Went to two Gamestops, a Walmart and a Best Buy. Walmart had nothing, one Gamestop and the Best Buy had only the Prophecies Guild Wars and at the second Gamestop, I found the Prophecies/Factions combo for the same price as either one separately. So looks like I'll be buying Nightfall online.

We didn't want to wait for the item to be shipped to us so we could get the CD code so we could play.

All in all, I don't feel bad about what I spent. $30 on Prophecies/Factions combo and then $60 on two copies of Nightfall. If $10 is going to make or break me, then I probably shouldn't be buying video games in the first place. ^_^

It was a good night of gaming last night though. I even blogged about it: http://mordiceius.com/2009/04/06/the...to-guild-wars/
